Camera phones seem to have become ubiquitous in our daily lives. In fact, they may actually be the most important social revolution since the cell phone itself. Here are a few things to look for in the future of camera phones.
1. Better camera
camera phones will be vastly better than they are now. They will be vastly better than any camera that has ever existed. Though they will likely always lag the newest technology because of their small size, the newest technology inevitably always filters down to mobile phones. Currently, 3D TVs and 3D movies like Avatar are all the rage in the media. It isn’t really too hard to imagine that eventually we will have 3D cameras and video recorders, and that, by extension, those technologies will eventually reach our cell phones. Won’t it be nice to watch home videos of your vacations in 3D on your 3D television? Or to look at the high-resolution 3D snapshots of your last family get together in your 3D picture frame? There is no doubt that this is coming.
2. Social Cameras
If you spend any time on sites like Facebook, then you already know that people takes pictures of themselves and their friends all the time and post them to Facebook. People can take videos with their cell phones and instantly upload them to YouTube. This is only the beginning. There is no telling what further developments and increased interactivity future cell phones will bring us. With 3D cameras and 3D displays, we will probably be able to have chats with people in which it feels and looks as if they are in the room with us. When we log onto Facebook (or whatever the next iteration is), we will join our friends in a full 3D interactive environment. There will be no need for people to fly in from all over the world for a meeting when they can use their cell phone to join in a virtual room with everyone else.
Let’s face it; until cell phones can actually teleport us to another location, they are pretty useless. After all, isn’t that what cell phones are all about? They connect our voice with the voice of our loved one 1000 miles away. They let other people see what we have seen when we upload out photos and videos to the internet. It’s simply a mediocre attempt at making us feel like we are actually there. The next logical step is actual teleportation. Until cell phones can accomplish that, there is always room for improvement.
